It was fun, sensitive and beautiful.. I'm having trouble putting my finger on what about Lamplight City it is that I'm enjoying so much, probably because while all the individual pieces are masterfully crafted, the beauty of it is in the way in which it all fits together into a really cohesive experience.Lamplight City feels like a living and breathing place. I believe in every character I've interacted with so far, I've had trouble putting it down for hours and hours on end because I've been in a constant state of wanting to see what happens next, and unlike most games I've played that provide branching narratives/moral choices...I actually feel like my actions in the game are of consequence.I'm already sort of dreading getting to the end and having to leave the fictional world it's created behind.. I had a great time playing this game, a great homage to Gabriel Knight: Sins of The Fathers as well. Animations have a great retro feel, music is on point and the voice acting is superb, making you feel quite immersed in the game as the story progresses. Really enjoyed the characters too! Would love to see another mystery game from this creator! Great job! :D. Delightful point-and-click adventure. The graphics, setting (bar the steampunk side) and character remind more than fleetingly of the old Gabriel Knight (Sins of the Fathers, not the sequels). The creators managed to create an effortlessly sympathetic main character, which is not easy, and a nice group of supporting characters. The puzzles are not that difficult, but they're not frustratingly stupid either, and I like the idea that you have an array of choices to end a case with (even though, of course, only one is correct), with a hint of moral choices to make. Very nice voice acting too. The only thing I'm not too crazy about is the alternate steampunk universe the game is set, not because I don't like steampunk per se, but because I find it slightly superfluous; I think the game could have easily worked in the real world setting with few adaptations. Still, it doesn't bother either, so it doesn't affect the enjoyable experience of the game in the slightest.. 3 hours in, this is great! The atmosphere is top notch (love me some steampunk, and it's alternate history to boot!), the writing's excellent, the voice acting is spot on, and the MUSIC... Oh man, the music! Worth grabbing even for these alone. Gameplay-wise, this really feels like a real detective mystery, with a lot of talking to people, gathering clues and documents and having them all neatly organized in a trusty case book you can effortlessly acces via right click. Really makes you feel like you're the one putting things together. One caveat is that you need to shift from a typical adventure game going-through-these-dialogue-options-casually mode into constantly being aware that e.g. insulting someone means that avenue of investigation can be cut off, and this potentially resulting in not being able to finger the correct suspect ( you know what I mean, get your mind out of the gutter). You don't always get a very obvious warning, so it's best to carefully evaluate every delicate response. Having objects on you but no way to look at them feels weird at first, but the scope of their use is very limited so far (and I suspect it stays that way), so the sort-of-inventory puzzles are only there for a bit of variety from the questioning witnesses and suspects (there is a lot of questioning in Lamplight City). Finally, gotta love the world-building. I'm only two cases in and I'm already invested in its world and its inhabitants' idiosyncrasies and prejudices, social and moral attitudes, etc. It's one of the highlights of the game, and the main draw for me, along with the atmosphere.Really enjoying this, and recommending it.. Really good. Great atmosphere, story & depth, really enhanced by the artwork, music and voice acting. Takes an inventive approach to the genre by removing inventory mashing puzzles and focussing more on making your own logical links and following leads, which works really well in context. The further you get, the more you can see how past decisions or lines of enquiry may have helped or hinderered your current case, as different people and places loop back into the story. There is some light handholding, but it's more a recap to ensure that you, as a player, are noticing the right connections, though it does seem difficult to make a 'bad' decision without getting clear warnings beforehand.. Great detective game, possibly the best I've played so far!It has most of the things you'd expect from a classic point and click adventure, and does them really well: World building, stories, characters, dialogue, art, music & voice acting. All top notch. What makes it stand out is possibly the lack of inventory, instead you just get new dialogue options when you've discovered a clue and it's relevant. Admittedly it was a bit like driving automatic for the first time after years of manual, constantly trying to bring up the menu for items xD But got used to it, and no rubbing everything on everything.Another point that sets this apart is probably that it's not strictly linear. You've got several different cases to solve, kinda like chapters, and you can screw up each of them. Gotta think carefully about how to question people, cause your choices matter in the long run.Instead of an inventory you've got a case book, listing current objectives, clues, documents & suspects. For the most part it just does all the pen & paper note taking for you, as well as give you all the pixely squiggly handwitten notes in clear font. Yay for optional quality of life improvements! Seems like they changed their mind on it in the very last case though, cause there you actually have to use it to access some documents.Really liked the 'chapter' style of dividing the game, it's certainly great for when you don't have time to play through it all in one go. Although it would've been nice to get the option to save right in between two. Instead you get a chance to save just before finishing one case, and then some cut scenes of arresting the accused, then some reflection on it, then the introduction of the new case... and THEN you get to save. So if that's where you leave next time you start the game you gotta remind yourself where you were. The casebook does the trick, still woulda been nice to just have it all in one go. Also yay for diversity & mentioning social issues!. Basically: do you like point and click adventure games? Just get this this one, It is one of the best in the genre. This is one of the best games I have played lately. A detective story where you can be the worse detective in the world and mess everything up, or be the best, or something in between. The way you interact with the characters and the dialogue choices matters and actually influences the outcome of the game. The voice acting is superb, the dialogues are funny and original, the visuals are beautiful, the music is delightful and the story kept me going. Best of all the puzzles actually make sense. I had a lot of fun with this game. Absolutely recommend!. Extremely good. So far, I have only really just finished the first case, but it seems that everything is done really well. The art, soundtrack and general style all stand out as particularly good, and the puzzles are also particularly good considering the one click interface (though I do think it's probably a case of "in spite of" the interface; a full featured inventory may have still been good). There is still challenge to it though, and so far at least, the challenge is extremely fair, often games that have simple controls have ambiguity as to what actions are to be performed. So far actually, compared to while I was playing through Unavowed, I think I may actually be enjoying this more, though I probably had higher expectations for Unavowed and I haven't actually yet played any other commercial Grundislav game. (Mental comparisons to Unavowed are inevitable since they are the two major AGS games of the most recent months). While I initially really liked the handling of the failure mechanic, it has ended up putting me off playing it a bit as there is always a risk of ruining the case, which makes it slightly less "fun". However, I do still feel it is a mechanic that really does improve the quality of the game, and it isn't some kind of pleasant comedy game where the only aim is to have fun anyway.. Starts off slowly, but then you start to learn more and more about the world and making connections between the characters. All in all a nice click and point game, more geared towards the story rather than puzzle solving.
